When we think about our skincare, most of us are more likely to focus on how to reduce lines and wrinkles, those tell-tale signs of aging that can often make us look older than we are. However, great looking, healthy skin is much more than that – in addition to reducing all those wrinkles, you also want skin that is clear, glowing, and evenly textured. The reality is that over time our skin becomes blemished and discolored; losing clarity and tone. It may require more than a simple skincare routine can offer in order to help it regain its once-youthful look.

There are many reasons for discoloration appearing on our skin as we age. One of the biggest culprits is the sun and, however careful we may have been to keep our skin protected, it’s not always easy to avoid. UV rays damage the skin at a cellular level and create dark areas commonly known as age spots. Hyperpigmentation is basically a concentrated area of the skin pigment melanin, so many skin brighteners and exfoliators contain ingredients that slow melanin production to reduce further discoloration. However, you can also treat age spots that already exist by making sure your product uses natural lighteners such as seaweed extract, which will reduce their appearance over time.
Because discolored skin has usually suffered from UV ray damage, make sure the product you choose contains ingredients that can provide additional benefits for skin affected by photoaging. Older, mature skin tends to be dry and delicate, so ensure that the formula contains Hyaluronic Acid, an essential hydrating substance that attracts and holds water molecules in the skin, creating a plump, fresh appearance. Skin is likely to need antioxidant protection too, so use a product that is able to fight free radical damage at a cellular level and, ideally, prevent more damage from occurring.

Finally, if you do decide to use a brightening treatment, remember that you must use it on a regular basis, day and night, in order to see results. Most skin products, such as Solvaderm’s Juvabrite are specially formulated to be non-greasy, and easily absorbed into the skin; allowing you to wear them under make-up or sunscreen. So, apply consistently and soon you’ll be seeing skin that is brighter, luminous and radiantly beautiful!
